1. Introduction of the Project

The “European Studies: Comparative and European Law” master's degree program, approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in April 2019, is a jointly organized program by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law of Wuhan, China and Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. The project aims to foster world-class legal talents, and cultivate modern, world-oriented, future-oriented, moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development, innovative spirit and global vision. The ability to engage in foreign-related legal practice and research on the international frontier of legal theory issues is of the utmost importance.

 

Sapienza University was founded in 1303 and is one of the oldest universities in the world, the leader in the international university rankings. Sapienza University consists of 11 departments, 63 departments and several high-level research centers in law, archaeology, physics and astrophysics, anthropology and cultural heritage, nanotechnology, cell and gene therapy. The Law School of Sapienza University of Rome ranks first among Italian universities. It has a top-level academic staff and many legal scholars with world-renowned reputation. It has trained many of the world’s foremost talents, including the current president and prime minister of Italy. Numerous other famous politicians, lawyers, judges, have all studied at the renowned university which has more than earned its reputation as the cradle of jurists.

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is a higher education institution directly under the Ministry of Education. The university is considered a top university within China in the fields of economics, law management…. It is a key university for the national “211 Project” universities and the “985 Engineering Advantages Innovation Platform” project. In 2017, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law was classified as a world-class university and given a first-class rank for its legal discipline (referred to as “double first-class”) and successfully raised the standing of Chinese universities on the world stage. The academic departments of Zhongnan all have obvious advantages such top-quality professors, scientific research achievements, state of the art training centers and active foreign exchanges with universities around the world. The Five Institutes and Four Departments of Zhongnan University have a profound historical heritage and are extremely important pillars of Chinese jurisprudence and economic education.

2. Educational System and Training

The master’s degree project, “European Studies: Comparative and European Law”, is located in the Nanhu campus of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The basic educational system is 2 years and the courses are taught in English.

The project introduces excellent team of professors and creative education scheme from Sapienza University. It implements the basic principles of combining theory with practice, combines unified requirements and the education of students in accordance with their aptitude, requires the students to master the theoretical knowledge of law and to have the ability to solve practical problems. Moreover, the project implements the mode of combining the mentor guidance and the collective training by the mentors group, and the mode of co-education and co-teaching by Italian teachers and Chinese teachers, so that the students can not only receive the education and influence from foreign experts, but also obtain the guidance and cultivation from domestic experts.

3. Acquisition of the Degree 

After getting the credits required and completing the master thesis, the student can get the master’s degree of “European Studies: Comparative and European Law” issued by Sapienza University.

The degree is legalized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The code of the approval is MOE42IT1A20181945N (Web link: http://www.crs.jsj.edu.cn/aproval/detail/2559).

4. Prospect of Development

“European Studies: Comparative and European Law” is a project that aims to educate legal professionals who can engage in academic research, administration and legal practice in state agencies, domestic and foreign enterprises and institutions, international and transnational organizations, and well-known domestic and foreign law firms. Law majors for high-level talents. The objective of this project is to cultivate professionals who have knowledge and experience of private law, economic law, and international law.

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law has signed collaboration agreements and carried out in-depth exchanges and cooperation with numerous universities and research institutes, including Sapienza University (Italy), University of Trento (Italy), University of Montreal (Canada). For students who intend to study abroad, the project provides the opportunity to study for a doctorate degree at a famous law school in Europe and the United States and to obtain high scholarships.

5. Application for the Project

5.1. Application Conditions

1) Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in law, or a second bachelor’s degree in law, or a master’s degree or above in law before July 2021.

2) Two recommendation letters from professors and/or associate professors.

3) English IELTS score above 6.0 or TOEFL score above 79.

4) Resume, personal statement, training plan, undergraduate course transcripts; proof of enrollment for fresh graduates, and graduation certificates and degree certificates for previous graduates.

5) All the application materials shall be presented in English, and the Chinese graduation certificate and degree certificate must be translated in English with seal and sent to the official email of Chinese-Italian Institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law: zhongyi@zuel.edu.cn.

5.2. Review and Exam

1) Application date: 1-1- 2021 to 31-5-2021

2) Examination time: Batch examination, batch admission, priority admission of the first batch, specific examination time to be announced.

3) Examination method: English interview.

4) Admission method: Self-assessment by the Sapienza University under the assistance of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The list of prospective applicants accepted will be published on the official website of the Chinese-Italian Institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law after the assessment.

6. Fees & Scholarship

6.1. Fees

Tuition fee: RMB 75,000 per academic year.

Payment time: Each student who successfully applied for the project must pay the tuition for one academic year at a time when registering. In the fourth semester, the students can apply to go to the Sapienza University to write the master thesis or do an internship, during which no additional tuition will be charged.

Accommodation fee: During the period of domestic study, the accommodation fee shall be determined by referring to the standards set by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.

The tuition and accommodation fees are determined in accordance with the current national and Hubei Province charging policies and regulations, and the annual fee catalogue list of this project is compiled according to the nature of the fees, and presented to the public through the official website of Chinese-Italian Institute of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.

6.2. Scholarship

The project sets up a scholarship system for outstanding students. The first-class, second-class and third-class scholarship are determined every year.
